Siren of Shooting Stars

dear friends,
it’s been a long week and a longer winter.
i began daydreaming about the warm weather
and the annual vacation we take each August.
we rent a 5 bedroom houseboat on Holly Lake
in Tennessee and find our favorite cove and
tie up for 10 ten days.

this is a repost, i edited the form. it was written
in one sitting at 3am as i sat as i always do, on the
top deck while family and friends were asleep. this song
was playing in my headphones and this poem was inspired by
the incredible shower of shooting stars that crossed the sky.

please play the song and begin reading…ty and i hope you enjoy.

    • …..thank you so much…the idea came to me two nights ago when a group of us were on the roof of the houseboat, all day there was cloud cover and they left just in time to see the most incredible shower of shooting stars any of us had ever seen..

..we had read they would be visible for a few nights, but we were not prepared for what we saw….

  1. Oloriel says:

Beautiful,it read like a prayer, like a chant and the virtues described are so precious and should be cherished.

    • ….ty Oloriel…yes, it felt like a prayer when i was writing it….we were so fortunate the timing of this trip coincided with the shooting star event….i’ve never seen anything quite like it.!

..a performance artist friend of ours who we invited on this trip read this and said she wants to record it, maybe with a different soundtrack and another voice as an echo..i told her to go ahead, do whatever inspired her

  2. Noora says:

Your wonderful poem took me on a beautiful, spiritual journey. Well done, my friend.

  3. Sky Vani says:

This is so good that it left me breathless.

  4. SSMatthews says:

Great music! Have you heard of Narsillion? One of my own favorites. You have created an outstanding mood of uplifting hope with these few well-chosen words. Softly do you sail the sky and touch upon the lights that shine therein. This is overall, excellent; like a charm to be repeated while addressing the night sky.

    • Mr Matthews, that whole cd by Pilgrimage, each song is prettier than the last. they’ve always taken me to that spiritual ‘place’ and now i have to check out your suggestion, ty and thank you, my friend.

  5. This was more than a shower of shooting stars rather a deluge of heavenly torch songs! BEAUTIFUL !

  6. The whole poem is serene. It spreads a warm feeling of peace.
    Ah.. pure and wonderful.. *smiles*..

  7. nutsfortreasure says:

A perfect pairing and a wonderful way for me to start my day.

    • oh i’m so glad you enjoyed it, i needed another reverie to
chase away my S.A.D! ty so much for being here.

      • nutsfortreasure says:

Each time I come to my feedly yours are not here so I hunt for your pieces with others who never show up even though it says I am FOLLOWING lol yours are always worth the visit. They have moved my surgery up 30 days so I have been busy 🙂

      • you are not the first to have issues with the Reader, ty for taking the
extra steps to be here. that’s a wonderful compliment. surgery? sorry,
i must have misunderstood your last post then, i thought you were
        recovering and clean?

      • nutsfortreasure says:

Yes that was #1 skin cancer 🙂 Blond Blue Eyed spells trouble lol this is the shoulder I have been dealing with since last fall I put on hold to SHOVEL 🙂 I will be fine just hope he can save my bicep 🙂 I want to stay STRONG 🙂

      • well, i hope you’ll recover in time to get some gardening done after
all that snow shoveling, moving soil around is more fun!
heh, i’ve managed to stay clear of BBE’s,
i cause myself enough trouble! lol

      • nutsfortreasure says:

        🙂 lol

      • nutsfortreasure says:

Thanks so much I love my doctors and though it will be hard work I am looking forward to gardening with both arms 🙂

  8. I loved reading this poem while listening to the beautiful music- the very music you were listening to as you wrote it. I felt like I was also on that houseboat, witnessing that incredible cosmic star shower. Thank you!

    • oh Jennifer, that place is magical for me and this was the first year i wrote while we there.
200,000+ unspoiled acres of sheer, tree filled cliffs, thousands of secret little inlets and
coves and abundant wildlife…..and quiet. the star shower was magnificent, ty so much for
your wonderful reaction. it was worth digging this out of the archives for your reaction alone!

  9. So beautiful. I just loved reading the fabulous poem to the wonderful music.

  10. Miranda Stone says:

I find this poem, and the accompanying music, very soothing. It instills such a sense of peace and wonder, and reminds us to look around and behold the beauty surrounding us, and take comfort in the fact that we are truly made of stardust. Lovely, my friend.

    • this trip was the first attempt to write in a place other than home,
and once we got there i just couldn’t stop writing! the serenity of
the lake was simply awe inspiring, ty Miranda for feeling what i
      was trying to convey.

  11. SirenaTales says:

Agree with Miranda–the word is wonder. Thank you for that, and the beauty. Xo

  12. stacilys says:

There’s a song by ‘Steve Bell’, called “Why do we hunger for beauty?” This poem makes me think of that song. I can tell that you were taking in the moment and basking in its beauty. Truly lovely. I really like how you give accompanying music to you poems because it helps the reader to get into the ‘flow’ of the poem. Two art forms working in conjunction with each other – Poetry and music.
    Excellent
    🙂

    • hi Stacylys, ty so much for appreciating the music pairing, it’s a
little peek behind the process i sometimes like to share. i guess
poetry purists would frown on the practice but as you said, it adds
      much needed context sometimes.

and yes, i was definitely ‘basking in the moment’, i felt like a kid.
i’d never witnessed a meteor shower quite like that before and how often
as adults do we get to feel like kids again? ty so much for taking the time
to experience all of what i was trying to convey, and for writing such an
      engaging comment.

  13. C.C. says:

This is so magical and has such an ethereal quality to it. Stunning 🙂

  14. Mary says:

I could feel the mood of the night as you took us on the journey, the quiet and serene beauty of riding the stars.

  15. Breathtakingly beautiful, song and poem together. A lovely way to end this evening. Thank you so much for sharing.

    • hi deborah, it always makes me happy to see you on my pages. ty for appreciating the song / poem pairing, that experience was so awe inspiring the words just wrote themselves. and i’ll continue to share, if only to reeve wonderful reactions like yours. ty again.
